Grand Forks’ Stray Media Group wins awards amid a changing business landscape


“We care more about the fit than sometimes the actual qualifications,” said Dave Gilbert, president and co-founder of Stray Media. “It has to be a good fit because we’re a tight group and we all have a kind of entrepreneurial spirit.”

Gilbert founded Stray Media Group in Grand Forks in December 2009 with his wife Heather. It started with one employee and has grown to 12 employees who work in-house and remotely. It offers its customers – mostly small businesses – comprehensive marketing services such as graphic design, digital marketing, logo design, web development, branding, video and drone services, clothing and signs.

Gilbert said the company is trying to hire three more employees. Its employees are trained in several areas to ensure the smooth operation of the machine.

“We keep growing and ’22 will be another year of growth for us,” said Gilbert. “We train everyone in many different areas. Certainly some of them are more specialized than others, but we have a good, solid team here. “

Stray Media Group recently won awards from the Muse Creative Award, including “Gold” in the Website Consumer Products / Services category for its website redesign with United Communications and the Publications-Magazine category for its work on Railroader Magazine with Northern Plains Rail Services. It was also recognized as the most innovative strategic marketing partner in the American Midwest at this year’s International Strategic Media Innovator Awards.

Gilbert said the company has grown significantly since its humble beginnings.

“It was really good growth,” said Gilbert. “Without going into details, people would be crying out for that kind of growth.”

Gilbert said the overall nature of Stray Media Group’s services is important.

“We have a great trust factor in our customers that enables us to do what we do for them. It’s just great because we’re working on their behalf, ”said Gilbert. “We work somehow differently, not in the traditional way. When we manage your brand, we look at all of your stuff, and it’s all, so to speak, including your budget. We look at everything they have to do and it allows us to be creative on our side to produce the things we do for our clients because they are not bound by hourly billing like a normal agency. We don’t do that. “

The Stray Media Group has changed its business operations due to the pandemic, but also due to the natural evolution and expansion of the company. With more employees and more services, the company has transformed into a more open work environment by placing great emphasis on open office space and collaboration between employees in “brainstorming” sessions. It has also made digital marketing a higher priority than it used to be.

Gilbert said the company will continue to change its approach in the future.

“Our business has changed a lot and we need to keep up to date so we can let our customers know what they can do to achieve their goals,” said Gilbert. “Yes, the landscape has changed a lot.”
